Reading comprehension is a difficult concept for many young students to grasp, but the “K12 Timed Reading & Comprehension Practice” app does a great job helping elementary students develop critical reading skills. Normally my 2nd grade student is not fond of reading and answering reading comprehension questions, but she enjoyed playing with this app! The app is easy for any K-4 student to use, and the presentation of the text is engaging as well.
More importantly, the app is effective at using multiple strategies to promote both fluency and reading comprehension.
- Times how long the student reads the text – When the student is reading the text, the app has a clock in the upper right-hand corner of the screen so the student knows how long it is taking for them to read an app. After the student finishes reading, the app says what the student’s WPM (words per minute) is.
- Asks 3 comprehension questions after the student finishes the text – In addition to giving the student’s WPM, the app also tests the student’s comprehension by giving three reading questions. These students assess how well the student was paying attention to the text and to see if they understand the purpose of the story.
- Monitors the student’s progress – After the student finishes the test, the app will then save the student’s progress so that they can see their results at a later time. You also have the option of not saving the result and redoing the test.
Another reason why this app is amazing is because you are given stories that range from K-4th grade. In turn, if you have a Kindergartener that has an advanced reading level then you can give them a 1st or 2nd grade level story to challenge them further. The app cost $3.99 for access to all 250+ of their stories, but they have a free lite version that contains 25 stories.
